The Ultimate Guide to D&D 5e HP Calculation

Introduction

In Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, hit points (HP) measure a character’s ability to endure damage. Calculating HP correctly ensures balanced play, whether you play a wizard squishy at level 1 or a barbarian tank at level 20. In this guide, we’ll explain the rules, show class-by-level examples, cover multiclass scenarios, and provide strategies—rolling versus average, maximizing Con bonus, and the impact of the Tough feat. Our built-in calculator delivers instant results for any class and level.

Hit Dice & Constitution Modifier

Each class has a hit die (d6 through d12). At 1st level, you take the die’s maximum (e.g., 6 for d6) plus your Constitution modifier. Each level thereafter you either roll your hit die or take the die’s average (see below), and add your Con modifier again. For example, a level 3 cleric (d8 HD) with +2 Con modifier has:

Level 1: 8 + 2 = 10
Levels 2–3: (4.5 avg) + 2 = 6.5 each → 13 total
Total HP = 10 + 13 = 23

Rolling vs. Average

You can roll your hit die each level for variable results or take the fixed average (rounded up):

  • d6 → 4
  • d8 → 5
  • d10 → 6
  • d12 → 7

Rolling adds excitement but may yield low HP. Average ensures consistency. House rules often mandate average for campaigns seeking predictability.

Class-by-Level Examples

Wizard (d6 HD, +1 Con):
Level 1: 6+1=7
Levels 2–5 avg: (4+1)=5 ×4=20 → Total 27

Fighter (d10 HD, +3 Con):
Level 1: 10+3=13
Levels 2–5 avg: (6+3)=9 ×4=36 → Total 49

Tough Feat & Racial Traits

The Tough feat grants +2 HP per level. A level 5 fighter with Tough adds 10 extra HP. Some races (Hill Dwarf) receive bonus HP each level as well. Our calculator includes these options automatically.

Multiclassing

When you multiclass, use each class’s hit die on level-up, add Con modifier per level, and apply feats/racial bonuses accordingly. Example: level 3 fighter/2 cleric combines d10 and d8 HD calculations.
